Designing with Nature in Mind

My name is Lani Phillips and I am a photographic artist and designer living on 155 acres in the middle of nowhere in Northern California. I am surrounded by the striking beauty nature with which nature has gifted us.

I can not begin to tell you how many times I have walked into a home to see the complete absence of nature. After experiencing this over and over again, I realized the need to venture out into the wild, capture it and bring it into my clients living spaces. The more art I create, the more the ideas keep coming. I love creating tranquil spaces, compliments of Mother Nature.

In this blog I'd love to show you how you can create beauty and comfort by bringing Nature within. It is never ending, and what the signature art pieces will bring into a new space will amaze you! The entire design concept revolves around a focal piece of art, which in turn inspires the color, texture, emotion and mood for the room.

I love creating from what is readily available. People are often surprised to discover they already own treasures that can be reused in ways that they never imagined. They will find them tucked away in the basement, attic or at mom's house.

I am a collector, I adore vintage material, reclaimed junk that can be transformed into stunning focal pieces in a design. The biggest obstacle to creating a new design these days is money, we are all struggling to make ends meet, so utilizing what we already have and doing some bargain shopping and refurbishing is key, and really a lot of fun.

The project I am working on is a guest bedroom with spectacular views. I have decided to place the bed right in front of the large picture window and use 6 inch risers so when you wake up in the morning your view is unobstructed and breathtaking, (that's how everyone should wake up, inspired!). I have posted the first swatch page at the top. This room measures 15' 6" x 11' 5" with 11' 4" vaulted ceilings.

A large upholstered headboard (front and back) will act as a wall behind the bed, the wall lamps will be installed right into the headboard and the cords will be hidden and run down to the base. As this project progresses I will post images and let you know what kind of accessory ideas I come up with in the process.

I have also posted the Dragonfly Mosaic, which I created, that will be the signature piece in the room, into which everything will tie. Remember this framed piece will measure roughly 47" x 37" We have big walls and high ceilings so we have room for an awesome punch! Up against that gray teal wall it should be striking.
